Stress BEFORE Conception Triggers Genetic Changes in Women’s Eggs

| February 13, 2014

stress affects fetus It is widely known that stress during pregnancy can affect the mental, physical and emotional health of a baby. However, new research suggests that stress prior to pregnancy can also influence the health of offspring long before conception.

The Israeli study carried out on rats, at the University of Haifa, suggests that female eggs are susceptible to genetic changes due to the release of stress hormones during “chronic unpredictable stress.”

The stress hormones lead to an increase in a protein (CRF1) that triggers cells to release hormones that are linked to stress and anxiety.

These protein changes were found to show up in the brains of female offspring at birth and in adulthood when exposed to stressful situations, in larger amounts compared to offspring whose mother did not experience stress.

Summary: Chronic stress can adversely affect the DNA you pass on to your children.
